DRUM INSTRUCTION

Beginners: Drum Selection , Set Up, Tuning and Posture:
For beginners starting out, who don't yet own drums, I suggest a drum pad(s) is introduced and accepted as where most of your early work should take place. Both to make sure the student has the interest, and secondly, that a tolerable long term practicing environment at home is established. If drumming is for you, or your student, and you are ready to invest in a real drumset, I am happy to offer input on drumkit selection, for your budget, playing level, and personal performance goals. I have extensive experience in tuning drums for various shell types, drumheads, musical style and pitch for live and recording environments. I assist new drummers with setting up their new kit, seating a throne with proper posture that allows for years of fluid playing and least wear and tear on your body.
Grip, Rudiments and Sticking Patterns on a Drum Pad:
I use and teach both match grip (most common) and traditional grip (as used in traditional jazz or march). I have come to really appreciate and highly encourage practicing your sticking and rudiment repetitions on a drum pad. I believe I have devised a way to make that pad work more interesting. Teaching the dynamics of "quiet hands" can go a long way in musical development. You simply can’t hit a real snare drum as often as you need to, to develop good hands. It's just entirely too loud and repetitive when first starting out. You cant hear a metronome or your note spacing if a live snare is ringing out. Learn to love the drum pad, it will absolutely love you back.* All onsite student lessons can be live-streamed as hi def video and audio, captured to student cloud , or , if preferred, by bringing their own SD card to capture their lesson.

BASIC DRUM INSTRUCTION

Play Along Now:
Most new students, from youth to adult want to take as direct approach as they can to playing drums along to music, or a jam with friends. In fact, with the seemingly boring rudiments and stick work process, students stop altogether. I can, and prefer, to teach a "by-ear" method to playing the drums early. Learn basic 4 on the floor (disco) and 2 & 4 (rock/pop), beats on the kick, snare, hi hats. "Playing along to music with any level of accuracy gets the inquisitive spark going with students in my opinion."
Accompaniment on the Drumset:
Learning a new song?, complete setlist or preparing for an audition playing along with other musicians? This lesson setting is for a novice level drummer who wants to experience playing along with other musicians. I can get you going on keys, bass or backing tracks. We can arrange sessions with your choice of musician(s) or arrange to have bass guitar or keys player to play and learn along with. Cost will be based on the scenario that works for you, and any session players needed. We will also introduce the process of stem separation, creating a backing and reference track and using DAW session players.
